Thousands call for Bulli Hospital upgrade

REMINISCENT of the passionate community campaign to save Bulli Hospital in the 1980s, thousands have signed a petition calling on the NSW Government to urgently upgrade facilities.

State MP for Keira Ryan Park will present the 10,000 signature petition to parliament on May 1.

“What we have seen here today is significant achievement. An achievement that has only been possible thanks to the thousands of residents that have been passionate about sending a clear message to the O’Farrell Government by taking the time to sign this petition” Mr Park said.

“Today a young local resident was the 10,000th signature we needed to be able to present the petition and have the matter debated on the floor of the NSW Parliament.

“The support that this petition has received is reflective of the great need residents have for Bulli to retain a fully functioning hospital. It is quite clear that this hospital is close to the heart of the local community.

“Our community has a growing demographic and families need to be confident that they have a local hospital they can get to quickly if their child becomes sick or injured and feel confident they will receive first class care.

“Bulli Hospital is in need of urgent upgrades to help deal with the region’s growing health care demands. Residents understand that Bulli Hospital will not be a major hospital like we have in Wollongong, however residents expect Bulli Hospital to be accessible 24 hours a day when they need care.

“With 10,000 local residents, not only from the Keira Electorate but the wider Illawarra region, having signed this petition it is now time for the Government to listen and take the immediate steps towards improving this vital facility.

“I look forward to tabling the petition and having the opportunity to debate this matter, show its importance to our residents and have the Government finally let the community know exactly how they plan to improve this hospital” Mr Park said.

David Akele of Corrimal was the 10,000th signature for the petition and was more than happy to show his support for the hospital.
