Wollongong gets set to celebrate Australia Day

WOLLONGONG City Council has officially launched its 2014 Australia Day program.
The Wollongong Harbour and foreshore area will once again come alive with an exciting range of family-friendly, alcohol free activities to celebrate our nation’s birthday.
Wollongong Deputy Lord Mayor Chris Connor said Australia Day is the biggest event on the city’s calendar. “There’ll be plenty on offer for all ages and interests, whether you want to get active or just relax with family and friends,” Cr  Connor said.
“We’ll be welcoming new Australians to our community at the largest citizenship ceremony of the year, and which will include an address by our 2014 Australia Day Ambassador, rugby league identity Matt Cooper.
“We’ll also be celebrating local talent with our Gong Factor and Youth Film competitions.”
The Wollongong Hawks will be taking on the Melbourne Tigers at WIN Stadium from 5.30pm.
The day’s program will start at 8am with the Australia Day Aquathon & Charity Walk. Throughout the day, there’ll be amusement rides, stalls, entertainment, sand sculpting, thong-throwing, special kids’ activities and more.
On the water activities will include sailing yachts, Dragon Boat paddling, and stand-up paddle boarding. There’ll also be skydiving and aeroplane demonstrations, and helicopter joy flights available.
Celebrations will culminate with the traditional fireworks spectacular over the harbour at 9pm.
Council is encouraging event-goers to take advantage of the free Park and Ride service from JJ Kelly Park and Vikings Oval, or use the Free Gong Shuttle service.
