REFURBISHMENT work at Corrimal District Library and Community Centre will begin on Monday January 13.
The work, funded through a loan under the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme (LIRS), includes an upgrade of kitchen facilities, floor coverings, light fittings, library shelving and painting; and the installation of a hearing loop and shade sail.
Acting Wollongong Lord Mayor Chris Connor said there will be some disruption but Council is working hard to minimise the impact.
“We’ve tried to assist all the groups who use this great facility with alternative arrangements while the work is being carried out,” Cr Connor said.
“Library patrons may also notice a little extra noise occasionally”.
The work will be carried out in stages and the community will be kept up to date with progress and temporary arrangements throughout the process. Cr Connor says the aim of the refurbishment is to provide a facility suitable for a broad range of activities. “The Library and Community Centre are already well used by individuals and groups, and we want to make sure it continues to be a central point for the Corrimal and surrounding communities. Creating these large, well equipped, multipurpose facilities rather than trying to maintain lots of smaller, less suitable buildings is another step towards our goal of Financial Sustainability,” Cr Connor said.
Council is currently inviting the community to provide feedback on three options that could help it secure an additional $21 million per year to ensure it can maintain and improve the city’s infrastructure.
Reaching this target could see an extra $51.2 million invested in community centres over the next 10 years.
A flyer outlining these three options will be delivered to residents over the coming week, and comments will be accepted until February 5.
