POLICE are appealing for information following the theft of a commemorative plaque from a monument at Stanwell Tops last week.
About 10am on Friday May 9, staff from Wollongong City Council noticed a large bronze plaque missing from a sandstone monument in a car park on Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
The plaque was dedicated to Australian pioneer Lawrence Hargrave.
Wollongong police were called to the car park and established a crime scene.Officers located gouge marks on the road’s surface and believe a vehicle may have been used to drag the plaque from the monument.About 3pm yesterday (Monday), following an anonymous tip-off, police found the plaque on the side of the road about 300 metres north of its original location.
The plaque had been concealed under bushland.
Officers are now appealing for anyone with information about the theft to come forward.
