EMERGENCY works is being carried out at Corrimal Tennis Clubhouse which was damaged by strong winds overnight.
The metal roof of the clubhouse lifted off and became wrapped around a light pole, damaging the building’s eaves and the pole in the process.
As the eaves are made of bonded asbestos, Wollongong City Council has isolated the immediate area and closed the facility.
Specialised contractors will shortly remove the asbestos containing material from the site, including both damaged sections and those parts of the eaves which are still intact.
Power to the site has been disconnected to allow clean-up and repairs to be undertaken safely. It is expected repairs may take up to two weeks to complete, weather permitting.Council is working with Wollongong Tennis Courts Association, which manages the facility under licence, to ensure the safe repair of the facility.Anyone with enquiries about the courts is asked to contact Wollongong Tennis Courts Association representative Dave Allen on 0414 011 798.
