THE Metropolitan Colliery at Helensburgh will close for eight weeks from January 4.
The Australian owned subsidiary of the US company Peabody Energy Corporation made the announcement this week, stating the closure was necessary due to “challenging markets”.
Peabody Australia said global demand and pricing for coal were under “intense pressure” as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company says there has been a decrease in demand for coal during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The energy union says the company is unable to continue to produce coal as it has no contracted sales.
Workers reportedly will be able to access paid leave during the temporary closure.
