A SIGN overlooking Sandon Point’s famous Jetty surfing break at Bulli has created a sensation on social media, making headlines in mainstream media, and sparking debate within the community over what justifies being ‘a local’.
A photo of the sign, ‘LOCAL’S ONLY BLOW-INS NOT WELCOME!’, was posted on the Woonona/Bulli Community Facebook Group earlier this week, immediately producing fierce debate.
The sign has overwhelmingly been condemned by members of the group, although some have defended the sentiment, recalling the Point’s notorious parochialism of the 1970s.
The online discussion has also prompted a comment from State MP for Keira, Ryan Park.
“This needs to be called out,” Mr Park, with a picture of the sign, posted on his Facebook Page.
“It’s wrong and it doesn’t at all reflect our community,” he said.
“We are better than this Illawarra. The only thing not welcome is this sort of behaviour.”
The sign, placed by an unknown person or persons, is believed to be in frustration to the growing number of Sydney surfers visiting Sandon Point and competing for waves with local surfers at the popular break.
The post generated a huge response on the Woonona/Bulli Community Facebook Page.
Mac Rob posted: “Such absolute drivel. The ocean is open. It’s not for locals only. Otherwise these so called local people wouldn’t be able to blow-in at another beach or that’d be awfully hypocritical wouldn’t it. No Bali, No Hawaii. Drivel.”
Bob Small posted: “A bunch of juveniles dun it for a joke … at the end of da day…’RESPECT’ “.
