AS the weather continues to warm, large numbers are again expected to visit the region’s beaches, as volunteers and Wollongong City Council lifeguards prepare for a busy summer swim season.
From Saturday September 23, flags will go up at Wollongong’s patrolled northern beaches.
Council lifeguards will take to the sand Monday to Saturday each week, while on Sundays and public holidays beaches will be supervised by volunteers from Surf Life Saving Illawarra.
Council lifeguard Holly Lane said that it’s important for beach goers to remember to swim between the red and yellow flags.
“It’s true that if you can’t see the red and yellow flags, we’re unlikely to see you,” Ms Lane said.
“This summer we’re giving our community and visitors to Wollongong beaches a strong reminder to swim between the red and yellow flags.
“If you do find yourself in trouble in the water, please try to stay calm. It’s easier said than done but do try not to panic. Float on your back to save your strength and raise an arm in the air to signal for help.”
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said watching lifeguards in action in a safe and controlled setting is a real privilege.
“We’ve noticed over the past summer that beachgoers are tending to spread out across the beach,” Cr Bradbery said.
“We’d like to give everyone a reminder that if you plan to go for a swim, you need to swim between the red and yellow flags.
“Our lifeguards do a fantastic job keeping our beaches safe, but they need your help. Don’t let a fun day out at the beach turn into a terrifying experience. If you see family or friends doing the wrong thing, remind them of the importance of swimming between the flags, where you’ll be seen if you need assistance.”
