The location of the proposed offshore wind turbines

A FILM presentation and panel discussion on the benefits of offshore wind farms will be held at Thirroul Community Centre tomorrow (Saturday, August 31).

Organisers, Good for the Gong will host a double screening of films Great Ocean Love and Walanbaa Ngiiyani/Stronger Together, prior to the panel discussion with light refreshments available.

Panel speaker and spokesperson Anna Feldtmann said the event aims to create a space for community members to engage in fact-based conversation around offshore wind, and the impacts of climate change.

“I’m by the ocean every single day, and it terrifies me to think about what climate change would do to this precious reserve that keeps global temperatures at balance,” she said.

“The potential impacts all life, including humans. That’s why I’m speaking at this event – to help more of the community understand that offshore wind is a step towards working with nature and not against it.”

The panel will include –

  • Lilly Pollard, a professional bodyboarder, ocean lover and environmentalist, working in natural areas restoration and management on Dharawal country. Lilly features in Great Ocean Love.
  • Anna Feldtmann, a local university student, volunteering with organisations like the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC).
  • Michelle Voyer, an Associate Professor with the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong, and an expert in the governance challenges associated with the ‘Blue Economy’.

The event will be held from 3pm to 6pm at the Thirroul Community Centre on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
