APARTMENT construction is expected to commence on the former Corrimal Coke Works site in early 2025 following the completion of essential preparatory works and the appointment of builder, Growthbuilt.
Legacy Property’s 550-home residential redevelopment, known as The Works Corrimal, will be located on 18ha of land on Railway Street, and will incorporate a variety of landscapes, precincts, and housing types, including five and four-storey apartment buildings. Over 180 apartments will be located at the northern end of the site.
Legacy Property has joined Illawarra Coke Company for stage one of the development that has a $75-million capital investment value. There would also be a new road, 2761sq m of private open space and 3630sq m of publicly accessible space.
The salvaging and stabilisation of heritage structures by Perfect Contracting Demolition has been successfully completed. Additionally, ABAX Contracting has been appointed as the civil contractor for Stage 1 Earthworks, including site servicing and road works. This phase is scheduled for completion in early 2025, setting the stage for apartment construction to begin shortly thereafter.

The Works Corrimal, designed by architects DKO, is a major urban regeneration project set to transform the former Corrimal Coke Works site.
Stage 1 of the development will feature five residential buildings, comprising 180 high-quality apartments that will offer residents contemporary living spaces in what developers say will be a vibrant community setting.
Legacy Property, Senior Project Director, Steve Ball has expressed his confidence in the project’s progress.
“We are thrilled to partner with Growthbuilt, a company that shares our vision for The Works Corrimal.
“Growthbuilt brings extensive experience in residential construction, particularly in the Illawarra and Southern Sydney regions, and their ICIRT rating underscores their commitment to quality and trust. This partnership will ensure the successful delivery of this landmark project for Corrimal and Wollongong.”
Growthbuilt is no stranger to the region having been appointed to build the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Shell Cove; St Luke’s Village, Dapto; Steelworks Hotel, Port Kembla and Kiama Village.
Growthbuilt, general manager, Adam Ashcroft said the construction company is proud of its track record in the region and looks forward to delivering exceptional homes in partnership with Legacy Property.
“Our team is eager to bring this transformative project to life, creating a vibrant new community for Corrimal,” he said.
With construction slated to begin in early 2025, The Works Corrimal is poised to deliver much-needed residential housing and contribute to the ongoing growth of the region.
