GOT a plethora of plushies, dozens of dinosaurs, or a legion of LEGO?  Trade them for something fresh at Corrimal Library’s Toy Swap on 21 January 2025.

Hosted by Wollongong City Council and not-for-profit Joy of Giving, the free community event invites families to exchange pre-loved toys for new treasures.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown highlighted the 27 million toys that end up in Aussie landfills each year.

“Lots of us have toys and kids stuff sitting around gathering dust. They might have been outgrown but still have life and adventures to share,” said Cr Brown.

“Through this event, Council is helping families to reclaim their playrooms and let those unwanted toys, games and clothing continue their story with another child. It’s the circular economy in action, where items are used to their fullest and then recycled for future use, making the most of the raw materials and energy used in production.

“Get the kids to fill a bag and bring it along. You’ll save money, help the planet and have fun finding new treasures to play with.”

Registrations are encouraged via Eventbrite

Guidelines for the swap are as follows:

• Each family can bring one bag of items to swap.
• Toys, books and games are all welcome as long as they are clean and in working order (the rule of thumb is: Only bring items you’d happily give to a friend).
• Battery-operated toys are not accepted.
• If you’re not able to attend but keen for a playroom clean out, consider donating them to your local secondhand store (good condition only), selling online or hosting a garage sale.

Cr Brown said another way to support a more circular economy was keeping quality front-of-mind when making purchases, of toys and otherwise.

“Just because a price tag is low doesn’t mean you pay less overall. If you have to replace it more often, those smaller amounts can add up and end up costing more,” she said.

“I encourage residents to do their research and buy quality goods from the start. That goes for toys, clothes, furniture, homewares, tools and anything really. Even better if those goods are made or bought locally to support local workers!

“It’s on all of us to reduce our waste. More considered purchasing is a great place to start.”
