MOTORISTS are reminded to slow down and follow the road rules as double demerits are back in place tor all speeding, seatbelt, illegal mobile phone use, and motorcycle helmet offences from Thursday 24 April to Sunday 27 April for the Anzac Day long weekend.

Roads across the state are expected to be busy as people attend Anzac Day events, travel out of town to make the most of the long weekend, and make their way home ahead of school resuming.

Transport for NSW Transport for NSW Executive Director Transport Safety, Chadi Chalhoub said it’s important that we all do our part to keep our roads safe for everyone travelling and ensure that everyone returns home safely.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and I urge all motorists to make safe decisions this long weekend. One bad decision on the road can cost you more than double demerits – it could cost a life.

“Sadly, six people died on our roads during the double demerit period for the Anzac Day long weekend last year,” Mr Chalhoub said.

“We don’t want more families to lose their loved ones so be vigilant and always allow extra time to travel even for short trips.

“If you’re travelling on regional roads, be sure to take regular breaks and watch out for animals on the road,” Mr Chalhoub said.

During this time, double demerits will apply to all speeding, seatbelt, illegal mobile phone use, and motorcycle helmet offences.
