The Illawarra’s newest purpose-built mountain bike trail has opened, with the ribbon cut on stage one of the $13.4 million Illawarra Escarpment project on 5 September 2025.
Final approvals for the remaining parts of the network are close, including stage two of the Kembla Mountain Bike Trails and the Balgownie Trails before construction commences in 2026. It is expected the complete network will provide around 70km of trails.
Just a shade under 20km long, the new Kembla Mountain Bike Trails cater for riders of all ages and levels.
From family-friendly green and blue trails to technically challenging black runs, there’s something for everyone in this unforgettable environment.
An initiative by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Wollongong City Council, in collaboration with the community, these trails offer an exciting, challenging ride carefully crafted to protect the Escarpment’s natural and cultural values.
When complete, the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network will elevate the region as a must-visit destination for bike riders.
NSW Minister for the Illawarra & the South Coast, Ryan Park said the community has been advocating for the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network for a long time, and he is thrilled to see stage one now open to the public.
“These beautiful and thrilling bike trails will expand riding activities for locals and encourage visitors from all over the country to experience what our region has to offer,” he said.
“Thank you to Wollongong Council, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the many community members and groups who have worked with us tirelessly in shaping this project.”
Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown said the project is part of Council’s commitment to offer a diverse range of riding experiences right across the city.
“It’s been a privilege to work alongside NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and our local community on these trails which are a celebration of collaboration, sustainability, and active recreation in one of the most stunning natural settings.
“We extend our sincere thanks to the NSW Government for its commitment and investment in making these trails a reality. We’re sure they’ll be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.”
Director, South Coast, NSW Parks and Wildlife Service, Julie Peterson said sustainability is at the heart of every decision made for the network .
“We’ve worked alongside many stakeholders to ensure the trails cater for all riders, while protecting the park’s natural and cultural values,” she said.
“NSW Parks and Wildlife Service is delighted to invite the community to come and enjoy the beautiful Illawarra Escarpment on two wheels.
“The Kembla Mountain Bike Trails offer more than just a ride, they are an invitation to connect with nature and responsibly take in all the Illawarra Escarpment can offer.
“Now these trails are open, I hope every rider enjoys the adventure, but rides lightly to help protect the area for generations to come.”
