STOP CSG Illawarra will host a second ‘Stop Coal Seam Gas’ human sign on Slacky Flat Bulli on October 21.

Actions to stop CSG in the Illawarra last year – at Austinmer Beach and the Sea Cliff Bridge – helped to freeze the local CSG project and make waves across the country.

On May 29 2011, 3,000 people turned out at Austinmer beach to form a human sign saying ‘Stop Coal Seam Gas!’ in one of the biggest protests the Illawarra has seen.

Following a failure by the NSW Government to rule out CSG development in drinking water catchments west of the Northern Illawarra, organisers expect this action to be even bigger.

Stop CSG Illawarra spokesperson Jess Moore said the NSW Government has given the green light to CSG in NSW.

“Fracking’s back on and exploration across five million hectares in NSW has been renewed,” she said.

“No part of NSW – not the land where food is grown, not our water catchments – is off limits to CSG development.

“Community action is the only thing that can stop this.”

The human sign will conclude a national week of action to stop CSG. Participants will spell out “Protect H20, Stop CSG!” to highlight and oppose the plan to put 150-200 wells in and around drinking water catchment.
