SUPPORTERS will show a display of solidarity for Rainbow Storytime at Thirroul Library on Saturday.
Organisers expect over 100 to attend in support of the event, with music, colourful clothes, games, chalk drawing and hopscotch.
Local queer parent, Renata said rainbow storytime is an event where children get the perfect mix of learning, diversity and fun.
“Local supporters will meet outside the library to demonstrate our support for the storytime event, our library workers and the broader Illawarra LGBTQIA+ community,” Renata said.
This isn’t the first time that queer allies, friends and supporters have come together to support a local rainbow storytime event. In 2019, hundreds gathered at Wollongong City library to demonstrate support for a similar event that went ahead successfully.
Local resident, teacher and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Miranda said rainbow Storytime in Perth had over 400 supporters last weekend to support a story time event, while a Manly event in March saw over 100 supporters.
“We want to bring as many people together to support our local rainbow storytimes.
“The Illawarra is a place of love, diversity and queer pride. There is no room for transphobia and homophobia here.”
Renata is inviting supporters to come and join the welcoming party at Thirroul Library steps, from 12.30 on Saturday, June 24.
“Community actions like these help to build a world in which everyone is free to be who they want to be, and we accept and appreciate each other,” she said.
Renata said the community commends Wollongong City Council and Thirroul Library for their dedication to diversity and community through events such as Rainbow storytime.
