Cars damaged after dramatic police pursuit ends in Helensburgh

SEVERAL vehicles have been damaged and a man charged following a dramatic police pursuit that ended in Helensburgh yesterday.

The incident began just before 2pm yesterday (Tuesday, September 26) when police attempted to stop a red van travelling through the Campbelltown area. The vehicle failed to stop, and officers lost sight of the vehicle.

With assistance from PolAir, the vehicle was sighted within the Wollongong area where a short pursuit commenced, however was terminated due to safety reasons.

A short time later, the van was spotted on Park Road, Helensburgh, having collided with several cars, including police vehicles, before stopping.

The 29-year-old driver was taken to Wollongong Hospital for assessment while his 34-year-old passenger was taken to Wollongong Police Station where she is assisting police with inquiries.

After release from hospital, driver was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with 12 offences including:

  • Never licensed person drive vehicle on road
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
  • Predatory driving
  • Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
  • Not give particulars to other driver (7 counts)

The man was refused to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday, September 27).

Anyone with information into the incident, CCTV footage or dashcam vision is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
