Greens councillors to retire at September Wollongong City Council elections

Greens councillors Mithra Cox and Cath Blakey have announced they will retire at the September Wollongong City Council elections.

WOLLONGONG Greens councillors Mithra Cox and Cath Blakey will retire at the September 2024 local government election.

Cr Cox was elected to Wollongong City Council’s Ward One, representing the northern Illawarra, almost seven years ago.

Announcing her intention to retire, Cr Cox said the time was right to make way for new, community minded Greens councillors.

“I am so proud of what we have achieved in my time on Council,” she said.

Cr Cox cited doubling Council’s footpath budget and building new footpaths and cycleways as a highlight during her time as a councillor. She also said that rolling out an urban greening program, and introducing FOGO were also great achievements.

Declaring a climate emergency and backing that up with actions to cut emissions, supporting the diversity cultural and the creative life of the city were other achievements during her period as a councillor that she said she could look back on with pride.

Also leaving after almost seven years on Wollongong City Council is Ward Two councillor Cath Blakley.

“I feel that I was an accidental politican,” she said.

“Someone that cares deeply about this community, and wants to see positive change, but never wanted to be a career politician. There are numerous ways we as citizens can be involved in shaping our community for the better, be it protesting in the streets or being elected as a political representative,” Cr Blakey said.

The Illawarra Greens will announce their replacement candidates for the election on Thursday February 15 at 10am at Market Square, Wollongong.
